Playing football is an activity that many children enjoy. But to 17-year-old Osama, it is a gift that he'd never take for granted. In 2011, when Osama was five, he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, a lifelong inflammatory bowel disease. Two years later when his family fled to Jordan, he was so weak that he could only crawl on the floor. By 2019 when Tzu Chi volunteers learned of his condition and visited him, he was already 14 years old but weighed only 37.5 pounds. The volunteers quickly arranged for him to undergo surgery. Thankfully, Osama recovered gradually and was finally able to walk for the first time in years. Osama is now 17 and weighs 66 pounds. He said he wanted to be a doctor and a Tzu Chi volunteer when he grows up so he can help more people in need.
